BD Loops BD-Megger Analog Megohmmeter & Loop Insulation Tester – 500V / 1000 MΩ
The BD Loops BD-Megger is a professional analog megohmmeter and insulation tester designed specifically for troubleshooting inductive vehicle detection loops used with automatic gates, commercial garage doors, parking systems, and access-control equipment.
Unlike a standard multimeter that primarily checks continuity and resistance, a megohmmeter can test the insulation resistance between the loop wire and ground. This makes it especially useful for locating one of the most common vehicle-loop failures: damaged or nicked wire insulation allowing the loop to short to ground.
The easy-to-read analog gauge uses color-coded ranges to help installers quickly evaluate whether a loop is good, questionable, or likely needs replacement.

Designed for Vehicle Detection Loops
Inductive loops are commonly installed beneath or inside pavement to detect vehicles approaching:
-
Automatic gates
-
Commercial garage doors
-
Parking barriers
-
Parking garage entrances and exits
-
Traffic-control systems
-
Access-control systems
-
Drive-through systems
-
Industrial vehicle entrances
Damage to the insulation surrounding the loop wire can allow electrical leakage to ground and cause intermittent operation, false detections, or complete loop failure.
The BD-Megger helps technicians identify these problems before unnecessarily replacing loop detectors or other control equipment.
Why a Megohmmeter Instead of a Multimeter?
A standard multimeter can verify basic loop continuity and resistance, but continuity alone does not tell you whether the loop-wire insulation is leaking to ground.
A megohmmeter applies a higher test voltage and measures insulation resistance between the loop and earth ground.
This allows technicians to identify insulation defects that may otherwise be difficult to diagnose.
Easy-to-Read Loop Condition Gauge
The analog display provides a fast visual indication of loop condition.
Typical BD Loops interpretation:
-
Below 10 MΩ: Bad loop — replacement generally required
-
10–40 MΩ: Suspect / questionable loop
-
45–2000 MΩ: Good loop
Environmental conditions can affect readings. BD Loops recommends additional testing when diagnosing intermittent loop faults.
Additional AC Voltage Testing
In addition to insulation testing, the BD-Megger can measure 0–600VAC, giving technicians an additional troubleshooting function in one portable meter.
Power Lock Function
The meter can be operated by holding the test button during measurement or using the MΩ Power Lock position for continuous testing without holding the button.

Important Safety Information
A megohmmeter produces a high test voltage.
Do not touch the exposed metal probes or loop conductor while the meter is energized.
Disconnect the vehicle loop from the loop detector or operator before performing insulation-resistance testing and follow the manufacturer's testing procedure.
This tool is intended for qualified garage door, gate, parking, and access-control technicians familiar with electrical testing procedures.
