Miller Edge Light Curtain 3' – Monitored Commercial Garage Door Safety System
MIller Edge
The Miller Edge 3' Light Curtain is a monitored commercial garage door safety device designed to provide a larger obstruction-detection field than a conventional single-beam photo eye.
Instead of relying on one narrow infrared beam across the door opening, a light curtain creates multiple infrared sensing beams between a transmitter and receiver. This produces a vertical detection field across the lower portion of the doorway, helping detect people, vehicles, equipment, and other objects that may enter the closing path of the door.
This 3-foot light curtain is UL approved and may be used in place of a monitored photo eye when installed with a compatible commercial garage door operator and according to the operator manufacturer's requirements.
Features
• Miller Edge monitored light curtain
• 3-foot sensing height
• Multi-beam infrared obstruction detection
• Provides broader coverage than a traditional single-beam photo eye
• UL approved safety device
• Can be used in place of a monitored photo eye in compatible applications
• Designed for commercial garage door systems
• Helps detect people, vehicles, equipment, and other obstructions
• Non-contact entrapment protection
• No physical contact with the door is required for activation
• Suitable for commercial and industrial overhead door applications
• Designed for professional installation
• 6-foot version also available for applications requiring greater sensing height
How It Works
The light curtain uses a transmitter and receiver positioned on opposite sides of the garage door opening.
The transmitter sends multiple infrared beams across the doorway to the receiver.
Together, these beams form a vertical sensing field or “light curtain.”
When all beams are clear, the garage door operator is permitted to close normally according to its programmed operating logic.
If a person, vehicle, cart, equipment, or another object interrupts one or more beams while the door is closing, the monitored safety circuit detects the obstruction and signals the compatible garage door operator.
Depending on the operator and system configuration, the operator is designed to stop and/or reverse the closing door.
Unlike a standard photo eye that monitors only a single horizontal beam, a light curtain monitors multiple points across a larger vertical section of the door opening.
Applications
Typical applications include:
• Commercial sectional garage doors
• Industrial overhead doors
• Warehouse doors
• Loading dock doors
• Automotive service doors
• Parking facility doors
• Distribution-center doors
• Commercial high-cycle door applications
• Doorways with frequent pedestrian traffic
• Doorways with vehicle and equipment traffic
• Applications requiring broader non-contact obstruction detection
Compatibility
The 3' Miller Edge Light Curtain is designed for compatible commercial garage door operators that accept a monitored entrapment-protection device.
It may be used in place of a monitored photo eye when the garage door operator manufacturer permits the light curtain as an approved monitored safety device.
IMPORTANT:
This light curtain is not universally compatible with every garage door operator.
Compatibility depends on:
• Garage door operator manufacturer
• Operator model
• Operator control-board configuration
• Monitored safety-input requirements
• UL 325 entrapment-protection requirements
• Wiring configuration
• Required monitored output type
Before ordering, verify the garage door operator model and confirm that the operator supports the Miller Edge light curtain or the required monitored safety-device interface.
Do not assume compatibility simply because the operator currently uses photo eyes.
3' vs. 6' Light Curtain
Miller Edge offers light curtain systems in multiple heights.
3' Light Curtain
• Approximately 3-foot sensing height
• Suitable for applications where a lower vertical detection field is sufficient
• Common commercial garage door safety application
6' Light Curtain
• Approximately 6-foot sensing height
• Provides a taller vertical sensing field
• Useful where greater doorway coverage is required
Select the sensing height based on the door opening, operator requirements, traffic type, and safety-system design.
Light Curtain vs. Standard Photo Eye
A standard garage door photo eye generally uses one infrared beam positioned near the floor.
A light curtain uses multiple infrared beams arranged vertically.
This allows the light curtain to detect obstructions at multiple heights instead of only at the height of a single photo-eye beam.
Potential benefits include:
• Larger detection area
• Improved pedestrian detection
• Improved detection of vehicle components
• Better coverage for carts and material-handling equipment
• Reduced possibility of an object passing above a single low-mounted beam
• Additional protection in busy commercial environments
The light curtain does not eliminate the need to follow all garage door operator manufacturer requirements.
Package Contents
The light curtain system typically includes the matched transmitter and receiver assemblies required to create the sensing field.
Exact supplied mounting hardware, wiring, connectors, and accessories may vary by manufacturer packaging and configuration.
Always verify package contents before installation.
Garage door operator, sensing edge, wireless edge system, additional interface modules, wiring accessories, and other safety devices are not included unless specifically stated with the product.
Installation Requirements
Installation generally requires:
• Compatible commercial garage door operator
• Proper monitored safety-device input
• Suitable mounting location on both sides of the door opening
• Correct alignment between transmitter and receiver
• Proper electrical wiring
• Secure mounting hardware
• Full testing after installation
The transmitter and receiver must face one another across the garage door opening.
They must be installed so the infrared sensing field remains clear during normal door operation.
The assemblies should be positioned where they cannot be easily struck by:
• Vehicles
• Forklifts
• Carts
• Pallets
• Loading equipment
• Moving garage door components
Installation should follow the Miller Edge instructions and the garage door operator manufacturer's wiring and entrapment-protection requirements.
Installation & Safety
The light curtain is a safety device and must never be bypassed, disabled, improperly wired, or intentionally defeated.
Disconnect electrical power to the garage door operator before making wiring connections.
Installation and service should be performed by a qualified commercial garage door technician familiar with monitored entrapment-protection systems.
Keep wiring and light curtain components clear of:
• Door tracks
• Rollers
• Hinges
• Springs
• Counterbalance cables
• Drums
• Chains
• Sprockets
• Operator drive components
• Sharp edges
• Pinch points
After installation:
• Verify transmitter and receiver alignment
• Confirm normal status indicators
• Test the light curtain across the entire sensing field
• Interrupt multiple portions of the sensing field
• Confirm the garage door stops and/or reverses as required
• Test the door through multiple complete cycles
• Test all additional required sensing edges and safety devices
• Confirm operator fault monitoring functions correctly
• Verify the door cannot close normally when the monitored light curtain is disconnected or faulted, where required by the operator
Never return a commercial garage door to service unless all required entrapment-protection devices are installed and functioning correctly.
