LiftMaster 480LM RJO Alternate Mounting Kit – Wall-Mount Opener Extension Kit
The LiftMaster 480LM Alternate Mounting Kit provides an alternative installation method for compatible LiftMaster wall-mount / jackshaft garage door openers when the opener cannot be mounted directly onto the torsion shaft in its normal position.
The kit uses sprockets and a chain to transfer rotation between the garage door torsion shaft and the opener output shaft, allowing the opener to be mounted approximately 5.9 inches lower than the standard direct-drive position.
This is especially useful when side clearance is limited, the normal mounting area is obstructed, or the torsion shaft is not suitable for direct opener mounting.

### What Is It Used For?
A standard LiftMaster wall-mount opener normally connects directly to the garage door torsion shaft.
In some garages, this is not possible because of:
- Limited side room
- Ceiling obstructions
- Structural framing
- Bearing plates
- Pipes or electrical equipment
- Torsion shaft geometry
- An out-of-round torsion shaft
- Other installation obstructions
The 480LM relocates the opener below the torsion shaft and connects the two using a chain-and-sprocket system.
### How It Works
Instead of the opener coupling directly onto the torsion shaft:
Torsion Shaft → Sprocket → Chain → Opener Sprocket → Wall-Mount Opener
This allows the opener to operate the torsion shaft while being positioned lower on the wall.
The alternate mounting arrangement lowers the opener approximately 5.9 inches from the normal shaft centerline position.
### Typical Compatible Applications
The 480LM is designed for select LiftMaster RJO / wall-mount systems.
Common compatible applications include select:
- LiftMaster 3800
- LiftMaster 3900
- LiftMaster 8500
- LiftMaster 8500W
- LiftMaster LJ8900W
- LiftMaster DDO8900W
Compatibility varies by opener model and installation configuration.
Always verify the installation manual for the exact opener before ordering.
### Important Compatibility Note
The 480LM is NOT a universal mounting bracket.
It is designed for specific LiftMaster wall-mount operator systems.
Before ordering, verify:
- Opener model
- Torsion shaft diameter
- Available side clearance
- Wall clearance
- Shaft condition
- Existing bearing and bracket configuration
- Operator installation manual
Do not assume compatibility simply because the opener is wall-mounted.
### Kit Components
The 480LM assembly typically includes:
- Chain
- T-bracket
- 1-1/4" sprocket with collar and hardware
- 1" sprocket with collar and hardware
- Cover assembly
- Required mounting hardware
Garage door opener and torsion shaft are not included.
### When Is the 480LM Recommended?
LiftMaster specifically identifies the alternate mounting kit as an option when:
- The torsion shaft is out of round
- The normal opener mounting location is obstructed
- Additional mounting clearance is required
It can often prevent the need for more extensive structural modifications when a standard wall-mount installation is not practical.
### Important Installation Note
Installation requires mechanical connection to the garage door torsion system.
The garage door must be properly balanced and mechanically sound before the opener is installed.
Verify that:
- Torsion shaft rotates properly
- Bearings are in good condition
- Sprockets are correctly aligned
- Chain tension is properly adjusted
- Mounting brackets are securely fastened
- Opener has adequate clearance throughout operation
Because the installation involves the garage door counterbalance system, professional installation is recommended.
