The Right-Hand End Style Garage Door Lock is an exterior-access mechanical lock designed for compatible sectional garage doors using 2" or 3" track. It allows the garage door to be locked and unlocked from outside, making it especially useful for garages that do not have a separate side or service entrance.

Garages with no secondary access are sometimes referred to as vault garages. In these applications, exterior key access can be particularly important because the garage door may be the only practical way to enter the space.

This right-hand lock features a 7-1/2" locking bar with a 2-1/8" throw and is designed to work with Part #274 as part of the compatible locking system.

Exterior Key Access

An exterior garage door lock allows the homeowner to operate the mechanical locking system from outside the door.

This can be useful for:

  • Detached garages

  • Garages without a side door

  • Garages without an interior access door

  • Manually operated garage doors

  • Older sectional garage doors using mechanical locks

  • Replacement of an existing end-style locking system

The lock allows the garage door to be secured mechanically while still providing exterior keyed access when needed.

What Is a Vault Garage?

A garage that has no separate side or service entrance is sometimes referred to as a vault garage.

In a vault garage, the overhead garage door may be the only available entrance. Because of this, the locking and emergency-access configuration deserves special attention.

If the garage has an electric garage door opener and there is no secondary entrance, SSC recommends using a Keyed Disconnect, Part #272.

Important for Vault Garages with Automatic Openers

When a garage has:

  • No side door or secondary entrance, and

  • An electric garage door opener

a Keyed Disconnect, Part #272, is recommended.

The keyed disconnect connects to the garage door opener's manual emergency-release mechanism.

If electrical power is lost or the opener fails, the homeowner can:

  1. Insert the key into the exterior disconnect.

  2. Turn the key.

  3. Pull the lock cylinder outward.

  4. Pull the attached release cable.

  5. Disconnect the garage door from the opener trolley.

  6. Manually open the garage door.

This provides an emergency method of entering a vault garage when the automatic opener cannot operate.

Right-Hand Configuration

This product is specifically the:

Right-Hand End Style Lock

Garage door end-style locks can be handed, so it is important to verify which side and configuration are required before ordering.

Do not assume a right-hand and left-hand lock are interchangeable.

Compare the existing lock orientation and hardware before purchasing a replacement.

Track Compatibility

Designed for use with:

  • 2" garage door track

  • 3" garage door track

This allows the lock to be used with multiple common sectional garage door track configurations.

Before installation, verify that the existing track and door hardware are compatible with this style of locking bar.

Locking Bar

The lock uses a:

7-1/2" Bar

with a:

2-1/8" Throw

The throw refers to the distance the locking bar travels when the lock is operated.

Correct bar length and travel are important so the lock can fully engage the compatible track-side hardware without binding or interfering with normal garage door movement.

Works with Part #274

This end-style lock is designed to work with:

Part #274

Part #274 is used as part of the compatible locking arrangement, so verify that the remaining hardware on the garage door matches this system when replacing an existing lock.

If multiple pieces of the original locking system are missing or damaged, additional components may be required.

Common Applications

This right-hand end-style lock is suitable for:

  • Residential sectional garage doors

  • Garage doors with 2" track

  • Garage doors with 3" track

  • Detached garages

  • Vault garages

  • Manually operated garage doors

  • Replacement of damaged end-style locks

  • Restoration of older mechanical garage door locking systems

  • Doors requiring keyed exterior access

Before Ordering

Garage door locking hardware is not universally interchangeable.

Before purchasing, verify:

  • Right-hand orientation is correct

  • Existing door uses an end-style lock

  • Track is 2" or 3"

  • 7-1/2" bar length matches the application

  • 2-1/8" throw is appropriate

  • Existing hardware is compatible with Part #274

  • Mounting configuration matches the current door

Whenever possible, compare the original hardware with the replacement before installation.

Installation Notes

Install the lock so the locking bar aligns properly with the compatible track-side locking hardware.

Before completing installation:

  • Verify smooth key operation

  • Confirm the bar extends fully

  • Confirm the bar retracts completely

  • Make sure the bar does not interfere with rollers or track

  • Check that the garage door moves freely when unlocked

  • Verify the lock securely engages when activated

Test the complete locking system several times before returning the door to normal use.

Important for Automatic Garage Door Openers

If the garage door has an automatic opener, make sure the mechanical lock is fully disengaged before operating the opener.

Never activate an automatic opener while the end-style lock is engaged.

Operating the opener against a mechanically locked garage door can damage:

  • The garage door opener

  • Door sections

  • Track

  • Locking bar

  • Lock hardware

  • Rollers

  • Hinges

For vault garages with an automatic opener, consider the Part #272 Keyed Disconnect for emergency exterior access during a power failure or opener malfunction.

Safety

Always verify that the locking bar is fully retracted before opening the garage door.

Never force the garage door if the mechanical lock remains engaged.

Garage doors are heavy moving systems and may contain springs and cables under substantial tension. Work involving the spring or counterbalance system should be performed only by individuals familiar with proper garage door service and safety procedures.
