When a LiftMaster garage door opener is discontinued, choosing its replacement involves more than finding a newer model number. The replacement may use a different drive system, require different accessories, or have installation requirements that affect whether existing components can be reused.
This guide explains the documented replacement paths for discontinued LiftMaster residential openers and links directly to the corresponding products at Garage-DoorParts.com.
Does a discontinued opener need to be replaced immediately?
Discontinued means the manufacturer has removed a product from its production lineup. It does not automatically mean the opener has been recalled or that every replacement part is unavailable.
If your opener operates correctly, its safety systems work, and the required repair parts remain available, repairing it may still make sense. A complete replacement becomes more attractive when several components are failing, a critical part cannot be sourced, or you want features that the existing system cannot support.
Before ordering a replacement, identify the complete model number and determine whether you are replacing the entire opener or only an accessory or service part.
LiftMaster opener replacement chart
LiftMaster’s residential opener transition bulletin identifies the following replacement paths. Ordering documents may include additional suffixes, such as MC, so confirm the exact model and package.

HEAD ONLY — NO RAIL INCLUDED unless the specific listing or confirmed package expressly includes one.
A replacement recommendation does not guarantee that the existing rail, belt, chain, trolley, wall control, or other installation components can be reused.
Replacing the LiftMaster 87504-267 or 87504R-267
The LiftMaster 6690L Premium Series belt-drive opener is the replacement to evaluate for the 87504-267 family.
Its manufacturer specifications include a DC motor, battery backup, myQ connectivity, a 360-degree swivel camera, and a 2,000-lumen LED light ring.
The camera can be repositioned. A swivel camera should not be confused with simultaneous panoramic recording.
For a garage beside or beneath living space, retaining belt drive may be an important purchasing consideration. However, an opener replacement will not correct noise caused by damaged rollers, loose hinges, worn bearings, or a binding door.
Before ordering the 6690L, confirm the door height, approved rail, package contents, and accessories required for the new installation.
Replacing the LiftMaster 87802 or 85870
The LiftMaster 4690L heavy-duty chain-drive opener is the recommended successor for these models.
Its published features include DC chain drive, battery backup, myQ connectivity, a swivel camera, and a 2,000-lumen LED ring.
The 85870 transition also changes the motor platform from AC to DC. That makes it especially important to verify the complete approved installation rather than assuming the replacement head can simply be attached to every existing component.
The 4690L is a residential opener. Its heavy-duty designation does not establish suitability for every commercial application, rolling steel door, or operating frequency.
Replacing the LiftMaster 84505R or 84504R
The LiftMaster 6580L Plus Series belt-drive opener is the successor to evaluate for these older belt-drive models.
LiftMaster lists DC belt drive, battery backup, myQ connectivity, a 360-degree swivel camera, and 1,500-lumen dual LED lighting among its features.
When comparing the 6580L with the 6690L, consider lighting, supplied controls, the approved rail, and the actual order configuration. A higher model number alone does not determine which opener best fits your installation.
Replacing the LiftMaster 84602 or 83650-267
The manufacturer-recommended successor is also the 6580L, but this transition changes the drive system from chain to belt.
An existing chain-drive rail assembly should not be treated as a belt-drive installation kit. Have the installer identify the approved rail and drive components before placing the order.
If keeping a chain-drive arrangement is important, the 4690L is an alternative to evaluate. It requires its own fitment review; it is not the specific successor named for these models in the transition bulletin.
Replacing the LiftMaster 81602 or 81550
The LiftMaster 2420L combines a DC chain-drive system, built-in camera, battery backup, and myQ connectivity, according to its manufacturer specifications.
For an 81602 owner, both the older and replacement models use chain drive. The existing rail still needs to be checked.
For an 81550 owner, the recommended successor changes from belt to chain drive. If retaining belt drive is a priority, compare the 6580L as an alternative upgrade with the appropriate rail and installation components.
Replacing the LiftMaster 81600 or 81650
The LiftMaster 2220L is the basic chain-drive successor listed for these models. Its published specifications include a built-in camera and myQ connectivity, but it is the non-battery-backup option in this comparison.
The 2220L without compliant battery backup is not available for sale or shipment to California.
California Health and Safety Code section 19892 requires battery-backup functionality for residential automatic garage door openers sold or installed in the state.
For a California replacement, evaluate the battery-backed 2420L or another suitable compliant model. Purchasing a separate battery does not make an opener compliant unless the operator supports an approved battery-backup system.
Replacing the LiftMaster 8500, 8500W, or 8500C
LiftMaster’s wall-mount transition bulletin named the 98022 as the replacement for the 8500, 8500W, and 8500C, with discontinuation effective June 7, 2023.
The LiftMaster 98022 wall-mount opener is therefore the starting point when evaluating a complete replacement for one of these older residential jackshaft systems.
Its published capabilities include battery backup, built-in Wi-Fi, and operation of appropriately configured doors up to 850 pounds.
The 98022 uses electronic monitoring instead of the older external cable-tension-monitor arrangement. This design change does not authorize removing or bypassing a required monitor on an existing 8500-series opener.
Before choosing a wall-mount opener, verify the door type, torsion shaft, drums, track configuration, weight, clearances, and electrical supply against the exact installation manual.
When should you consider the 98032?
The LiftMaster 98032 heavy-duty wall-mount opener has a published door-weight range of 400–1,100 pounds.
That range matters at both ends. The 98032 is not automatically the better choice for a lighter residential door.
Select the opener according to the permitted application. A larger motor must never be used to compensate for a broken spring, slipping cable, binding track, or unbalanced door.
Will your existing remotes and wall controls work?
Accessory compatibility must be checked separately from mechanical fitment.
The newer trolley models discussed here use Security+ 3.0. An older remote or keypad should not be assumed compatible merely because both products carry the LiftMaster name.
Multi-generation options include the L993M three-button MAX remote and L979M MAX keypad, subject to their published compatibility.
The 98022 and 98032 require a different distinction. LiftMaster announced that their packages would begin receiving L993M remotes in January 2026 while retaining the existing Security+ 2.0 platform. The packaging bulletin does not describe conversion of these operators to Security+ 3.0.
A newer remote in the box does not change the opener’s wall-control requirements.
What to verify before ordering
-
The full opener model and manufacturing date.
-
Door height, type, weight, and mechanical condition.
-
The approved rail or wall-mount installation arrangement.
-
Whether the order includes only the head or additional components.
-
Remote, keypad, wall-control, and vehicle-button compatibility.
-
Battery-backup requirements.
-
Current camera, recording, and myQ subscription requirements.
For built-in vehicle buttons, check the exact vehicle and opener combination through HomeLink support. Do not assume an older bridge intended for Security+ 2.0 solves a Security+ 3.0 pairing issue.
Find the correct replacement
Compare the 6690L premium belt drive, 6580L belt drive, 4690L heavy-duty chain drive, 2420L battery-backup chain drive, and 98022 wall-mount opener according to your door and installation requirements.
If you need help identifying the correct replacement, contact Garage-DoorParts.com with photographs of the opener label, existing rail or shaft arrangement, and accessories you want to retain.
Safety: Follow the exact manufacturer instructions. Have a qualified technician address springs, cables, electrical faults, and an unbalanced door. Never bypass required safety devices. Complete the manufacturer’s safety and reversal tests after installation.
