The Genie 37220R Safe-T-Beam Safety Sensor Kit is a genuine replacement photo-eye system for compatible Genie residential garage door openers.

The system uses an invisible infrared beam between two sensors mounted near the bottom of the garage door opening. If a person, pet, vehicle, or other obstruction interrupts the beam while the garage door is closing, the opener stops and reverses the door to the fully open position.

This complete replacement set includes one red-LED source sensor, one green-LED receiving sensor, mounting brackets, and installation hardware. It replaces damaged, misaligned, or malfunctioning Genie Safe-T-Beam photo eyes.

Normal LED Operation

When the Safe-T-Beam system is aligned and operating correctly:

• One sensor displays a solid red LED
• The opposite sensor displays a solid green LED

Both sensors are not supposed to display the same color.

A blinking red light, an unlit sensor, or intermittent LED operation may indicate misalignment, an obstruction, damaged wiring, loose connections, electrical interference, direct sunlight, or a defective sensor.

Common Symptoms of a Sensor Problem

Replacement or troubleshooting may be necessary when:

• The garage door opens but will not close
• The door reverses immediately after starting downward
• The door closes only while the wall-control button is continuously held
• The opener light flashes when attempting to close
• The red sensor light continuously blinks
• One or both sensor lights remain off
• Sensor housings or lenses are physically damaged
• The door reverses intermittently with no visible obstruction

These symptoms do not automatically mean that the sensors are defective. Inspect alignment, wiring, lenses, sunlight exposure, and the beam path before replacing the system.

Troubleshooting Before Replacement

Before ordering new sensors, check for:

• Dirt, dust, condensation, or spider webs on the lenses
• An object blocking the infrared beam
• Sensors that were bumped out of alignment
• Loose wires at the sensor terminals
• Loose connections at the opener powerhead
• Cut, pinched, stapled, or corroded low-voltage wire
• Direct sunlight shining into the receiving sensor
• Damaged mounting brackets
• A sensor mounted too high or too low

The receiving sensor should be installed on the side of the garage opening that receives the least direct sunlight whenever possible.

Older Four-Wire Sensor Replacement

Some older Genie installations use a series-wired system where one original sensor has four wires and the other has two wires.

When replacing that style:

• Match the two plain or white wires together
• Match the two striped wires together
• Connect each matching pair to one screw terminal
• Connect the remaining two-wire sensor according to Genie’s instructions

The replacement sensor terminals are non-polar, meaning either conductor can connect to either sensor terminal. The conductors must still be grouped correctly when adapting an older series-wired arrangement.

When the existing wiring cannot be positively identified, professional installation is recommended.

Installation Notes

Disconnect electrical power to the garage door opener before attaching or removing sensor wiring.

Install the sensors:

1. On opposite sides of the garage door opening
2. Between 5 and 6 inches above the garage floor
3. Facing directly toward one another
4. With an unobstructed line of sight
5. No more than approximately 30 feet apart

Existing wiring may be reused if it is not broken, cut, frayed, corroded, or otherwise damaged.

At each sensor, either conductor may connect to either screw terminal because the sensor connections are non-polar. At the opener, connect the sensor wiring to the designated Safe-T-Beam terminals—commonly terminals 1 and 2—according to the opener’s manual.

Do not drive staples tightly against the wire. A staple that crushes or cuts the insulation can cause intermittent operation or complete Safe-T-Beam failure.

After installation, aim the sensors toward one another and adjust them until one LED remains solid red and the other remains solid green.

Safety-Reversal Test

The Safe-T-Beam system must be tested after installation:

1. Clear all people, vehicles, tools, and other objects from the door area.
2. Begin closing the garage door.
3. Use a long object to interrupt the infrared beam without entering the door’s path.
4. Confirm that the door stops and reverses to its fully open position.

Do not operate the opener if the garage door continues closing after the beam is interrupted.

Safety Warning

Safe-T-Beam sensors are required safety components and should never be removed, bypassed, mounted above the specified height, or intentionally disabled.

Disconnect the opener from electrical power before working on its wiring. Keep people and pets away from the door while testing.

After installation, test both the photoelectric safety sensors and the opener’s contact-reversal system. Do not use the garage door opener until every required safety feature is functioning correctly.
