Product Description
The EMX PC-3 Infrared Modulated Photoeye Kit is a non-reflective thru-beam sensor designed for compatible garage-door and rolling-door operators that accept a standard dry-contact safety or reversing input.
The kit includes a separate transmitter and receiver installed on opposite sides of the door opening. The transmitter sends a modulated infrared beam to the receiver. When an object interrupts the beam, the receiver changes the state of its Form C relay output so the connected operator can respond according to its programmed safety-input function.
A wide 24-degree detection angle simplifies alignment, while the red LED indicates when the receiver is misaligned or the infrared beam is obstructed. No sensitivity adjustment or calibration is required.
This PC-3 is a non-monitored, UL 325 non-compliant photoeye. It must not be represented as a current monitored entrapment-protection device.

How It Works
The transmitter and receiver are mounted directly across from one another with a clear line of sight.
During normal operation, the receiver detects the infrared beam from the transmitter. When a vehicle, door component or other obstruction interrupts the beam, the receiver’s relay changes state and sends a dry-contact signal to the connected operator.
The exact operator response—such as stopping, reversing or preventing closure—depends on the input terminals and programming of the connected control board.
Compatibility
The PC-3 may be used with select garage-door and rolling-door operators that accept a non-monitored Form C dry-contact input.
Possible compatible input types include:
- Safety reverse
- Open
- Obstruction detection
- Auxiliary dry-contact input
- Other approved control-board inputs specified by the operator manufacturer
Important Matching Notes
This sensor is not universal and is not a monitored UL 325 entrapment-protection device.
The EMX operating instructions identify the PC-3 as UL 325 non-compliant and warn that it does not contain the self-checking redundant circuitry required for personnel-protection applications.
Before ordering, confirm:
- The operator accepts a non-monitored dry-contact sensor
- The available power supply is compatible
- The input accepts normally open or normally closed relay contacts
- A monitored UL 325 device is not required
- The installation location will remain dry
- The opening does not exceed 30 feet
Do not assume compatibility based only on the LiftMaster name currently used on the product page. Many newer LiftMaster commercial operators require an approved monitored entrapment-protection device and may not accept the PC-3 as their primary safety sensor.

Installation Notes
Mount the transmitter and receiver directly opposite one another with an unobstructed line of sight. Keep the distance between the units within the specified 30-foot range.
The PC-3 housing is rated IP50 and is not watertight. Install it indoors or in a completely protected, dry location where it cannot be exposed to rain, washing, condensation or water spray. The current EMX manual specifically warns against installation outdoors or anywhere the units may become wet.
Disconnect operator power before making wiring connections. After installation, test the photoeye and the complete door system through multiple operating cycles.
Safety Warning
The EMX PC-3 is UL 325 non-compliant and must not be used by itself for personnel protection.
Do not use this product as a substitute for a required monitored entrapment-protection device. Confirm all operator, code and UL 325 requirements before installation.
Commercial doors and operators can cause serious injury or death when improperly installed or serviced. Installation and testing should be performed by a qualified door-system technician.
