Keyed Garage Door T-Handle – 3-1/4" Shaft, Fits 1-3/8" to 2" Thick Doors
The Keyed Garage Door T-Handle is an exterior locking handle designed for compatible sectional garage doors that use a traditional mechanical lock or latch system. It provides keyed access from outside the garage and a rotating shaft that can connect to compatible interior lock hardware.
This replacement T-handle is a practical solution when an existing exterior handle is worn, damaged, difficult to turn, or the original keys have been lost while the rest of the locking system remains usable.
Designed for garage doors from 1-3/8" through 2" thick, the handle uses a 3-1/4" long shaft with 90-degree rotationfor operating compatible garage door locking mechanisms.

Garage Door Applications
This keyed T-handle is commonly used on sectional garage doors that rely on a mechanical locking system rather than only an automatic garage door opener.
Typical applications include:
-
Replacing a damaged exterior T-handle
-
Replacing a handle with lost or damaged keys
-
Restoring an existing mechanical garage door lock
-
Manually operated residential garage doors
-
Detached garages
-
Garage doors using compatible spring-latch systems
-
Doors using cable- or chain-operated latch mechanisms
-
Compatible light-commercial sectional doors
How the T-Handle Works
The T-handle mounts through the garage door section with the keyed portion accessible from outside.
When the correct key is inserted and the handle is unlocked, the handle can rotate approximately 90 degrees. The attached 3-1/4" shaft transfers that rotation to the compatible locking hardware mounted on the inside of the garage door.
Depending on the existing door configuration, the shaft may operate:
-
A central lock mechanism
-
Spring-loaded side latches
-
Cable-operated latches
-
Sash-chain locking assemblies
-
Other compatible mechanical garage door lock hardware
The exact interior linkage depends on the garage door's existing lock system.
Door Thickness Compatibility
Designed for doors measuring:
1-3/8" through 2" thick
Door thickness is an important fitment measurement because it determines whether the handle shaft and mounting posts will properly reach the interior locking components.
Measure the actual door section before ordering if the existing hardware is unavailable for comparison.
Shaft Dimensions
-
Shaft Length: 3-1/4"
-
Mounting Post Length: 13/16"
-
Rotation: 90°
When replacing an existing T-handle, compare the shaft length, shaft style, mounting-post spacing, and interior lock connection before purchasing.
Included Components
-
1 × Keyed T-Handle
-
2 × Keys
-
1 × Push Nut
Fasteners Required
Two 10-24 mounting fasteners are required and are NOT included.
If replacing an existing handle, the original fasteners may be reusable if they are the correct size and remain in good condition.
Otherwise, obtain two compatible 10-24 fasteners appropriate for the door construction and installation.

Before Ordering
Garage door T-handles are not universally interchangeable.
Before replacing an existing handle, compare:
-
Door thickness
-
Shaft length
-
Shaft shape and connection
-
Mounting-post position
-
Existing latch or lock mechanism
-
Required handle rotation
-
Interior linkage configuration
Do not select a replacement handle based only on its exterior appearance.
Keyed T-Handle vs. Dummy T-Handle
A keyed T-handle contains a locking mechanism and is designed to provide controlled exterior access to a compatible mechanical garage door lock.
A dummy T-handle is primarily a grab handle and does not provide keyed locking.
Choose the keyed version when the existing door requires the exterior handle to operate or secure its mechanical locking system.
Important for Automatic Garage Door Openers
If the garage door is equipped with an automatic opener and also uses a mechanical lock, make sure the mechanical lock is completely disengaged before operating the opener.
Attempting to run an opener while the garage door remains mechanically locked can damage:
-
The opener
-
Door sections
-
Track
-
Locking hardware
-
Hinges
-
Other door components
Installation Notes
Position the T-handle through the existing door opening and verify that the shaft properly engages the interior locking mechanism.
Before completing installation:
-
Confirm the door thickness is within the specified range
-
Verify the shaft reaches the interior lock mechanism
-
Confirm smooth 90° rotation
-
Verify the key locks and unlocks the handle correctly
-
Check that the interior latches fully engage and release
-
Make sure no locking components interfere with rollers, hinges, or track
Test the locking system several times before placing the door back into normal service.
Safety
Never force a garage door open while its mechanical locking system is engaged.
Before operating the door manually or with an electric opener, verify that all mechanical latches have fully disengaged.
Garage doors contain heavy moving components and may use springs, cables, and other hardware under substantial tension. Repairs involving those systems should be performed only by individuals familiar with proper garage door service procedures.
