Keyed Garage Door Emergency Disconnect – Exterior Manual Release Kit
Category: Locks
The Keyed Garage Door Emergency Disconnect provides exterior access to a garage door when the automatic opener cannot operate because of a power outage, opener failure, or other malfunction.
Installed through the garage door, the keyed release connects to the opener’s manual-release trolley with a 3-foot industrial-strength cable. Turning the key allows the lock cylinder to be pulled from the exterior of the door, which activates the opener’s emergency release mechanism. Once the trolley is disconnected, the garage door can be operated manually.
This type of emergency release is especially important for garages that do not have a separate entry door, since an opener failure or power outage could otherwise leave the garage inaccessible from the outside.

How the Keyed Disconnect Works
Most trolley-style garage door openers include an emergency release cord on the inside of the garage. Under normal circumstances, pulling that cord disconnects the door from the opener so the door can be raised manually.
The problem is that the emergency release is normally accessible only from inside the garage.
A keyed disconnect solves this problem by connecting the opener's manual-release mechanism to an exterior lock cylinder.
To use the system:
-
Insert the key into the exterior lock.
-
Unlock and remove or pull the lock cylinder as designed.
-
Pull the connected release cable from outside the garage.
-
The cable activates the opener's manual-release trolley.
-
The garage door can then be raised manually.
After access is restored, the opener trolley can be re-engaged according to the garage door opener manufacturer's instructions.
Ideal for Garages Without a Secondary Entrance
This emergency disconnect is particularly useful for garages where the overhead garage door is the only available entrance.
Without an exterior emergency release, a power failure or damaged garage door opener may prevent access to the garage.
Installing a keyed disconnect creates a mechanical backup method for reaching and releasing the opener from outside.
Common applications include:
-
Detached garages
-
Garages without a side entry door
-
Residential garage doors with automatic openers
-
Replacement of an existing keyed emergency release
-
New garage door opener installations
-
Properties where emergency manual access is required
Compatibility
Designed for overhead garage doors equipped with a garage door opener that uses a manual release-type trolley.
Before ordering, verify that your opener has a compatible emergency-release mechanism and that the release cable can be routed safely from the keyed disconnect to the opener trolley.
Door Thickness
The kit includes an extension sleeve designed to accommodate garage doors up to:
2" Thick
This makes the assembly suitable for many common residential sectional garage door constructions.

Important
This product does not unlock the garage door itself and does not replace a conventional garage door lock.
Its purpose is to disconnect a compatible automatic garage door opener from the door, allowing the door to be operated manually when the opener cannot function.
If the garage door has an additional mechanical slide lock or other locking device, that lock must also be disengaged before the door can be opened.
Installation Notes
The keyed disconnect should be positioned so the connecting cable can reach the garage door opener's emergency-release mechanism without interfering with rollers, hinges, tracks, or other moving components.
The cable should have enough movement to activate the trolley release while avoiding excessive slack that could interfere with normal door operation.
After installation, test the emergency release from outside the garage and verify that the opener can be properly re-engaged.
Safety
Before manually opening a disconnected garage door, confirm that the door is properly balanced and can be safely operated by hand.
A garage door that is unusually heavy, falls when released, or cannot remain partially open may have a spring or counterbalance problem. Do not attempt to manually operate a damaged or improperly balanced door.
Garage door springs, cables, and counterbalance components can be under significant tension. Service involving these components should be performed by individuals familiar with garage door systems and appropriate safety procedures.
