Discontinued LiftMaster Remotes, Keypads and Wall Controls: How to Choose the Correct Replacement

Discontinued LiftMaster Remotes, Keypads and Wall Controls: How to Choose the Correct Replacement

Updated October 4, 2026

A discontinued LiftMaster remote or keypad does not necessarily require replacing the garage door opener. In many cases, a current accessory can operate the existing system once the correct radio technology and model compatibility have been identified.

The challenge is that newer does not always mean compatible. MAX, universal, and standard Security+ 3.0 accessories cover different applications. Wall controls also have requirements that cannot be determined from appearance or wire count.

This guide explains the replacement paths and links to the corresponding products at Garage-DoorParts.com.

Start with the opener and accessory model numbers

Before selecting a replacement, photograph the opener’s model label, the remote or keypad label, and the learn button.

If an external receiver is installed, record its model as well. The receiver may determine remote compatibility independently of the opener’s brand.

Pay attention to small differences. 893LM and 893MAX are different products. L993M and L993S also have different compatibility.

A status light’s color is not necessarily the color of the learn button.

Discontinued remote and keypad replacement chart

LiftMaster’s accessory discontinuation bulletin identifies these transitions. Dates refer to manufacturer discontinuation, not the date all remaining dealer inventory disappears.

Replacing an 893LM, 371LM, 373LM, or 971LM remote

The LiftMaster L993M three-button MAX remote is the listed replacement for these models.

Its manufacturer compatibility specifications include supported red/orange, purple/brown, yellow, and white learn-button systems. Its residential coverage includes LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and most Craftsman openers manufactured after 1997 with safety sensors.

A three-button replacement can be used for a single compatible opener. Additional buttons may remain unused or be programmed for other compatible equipment.

Green learn-button compatibility is not listed for L993M. For those older systems, evaluate the L992U universal remote.

Do not confuse the discontinued 893LM with the 893MAX remote. The discontinuation bulletin expressly retained 893MAX for supported legacy applications.

Replacing an 890MAX keychain remote

The LiftMaster L932M keychain remote is the recommended successor.

There is an important functional difference: the L932M has two buttons, while the 890MAX has three.

If you use all three buttons on an 890MAX for different devices, a single L932M will not preserve those three independent assignments. Consider the L993M three-button remote after confirming compatibility with each receiver.

The L932M specifications list supported red/orange, purple/brown, yellow, and white learn-button systems. Do not assume it retains every legacy application supported by the older remote.

Replacing a 374UT or 380UT universal remote

The LiftMaster L992U universal two-button remote is the replacement to evaluate.

Its published compatibility includes supported LiftMaster-family green, red/orange, purple/brown, yellow, and white learn-button systems, plus specified protocols from other manufacturers.

“Universal” means the protocols listed by the manufacturer. It does not mean every opener from every brand.

For a two-door garage with different opener brands, check both exact models. For a community gate, confirm the receiver and enrollment requirements with the property manager or installer.

Replacing an 877LM keypad

The LiftMaster L979M wireless MAX keypad is the listed successor.

Its manufacturer specifications cover supported white, yellow, purple/brown, and red/orange learn-button systems. Features include an illuminated keypad and temporary PIN capability.

Choose the keypad according to the opener you are keeping. A replacement keypad does not add Wi-Fi to an older motor or give it every function of a newer connected opener.

Replacing a 387LM keypad

The LiftMaster L979U universal wireless keypad is the replacement to evaluate for the discontinued 387LM.

Its published compatibility also makes it an option to investigate for supported green learn-button systems.

As with universal remotes, verify the exact opener and supported protocol. The word universal should not replace checking the manual.

LiftMaster learn-button compatibility at a glance

The table below summarizes the listed LiftMaster-family applications. It is a starting point; the complete model must still be checked.

Learn-button system Remote options to evaluate Keypad options to evaluate
Green L992U L979U
Red/orange L993M, L932M, or L992U L979M or L979U
Purple/brown L993M, L932M, or L992U L979M or L979U
Yellow, Security+ 2.0 L993M, L932M, or L992U L979M or L979U
White, Security+ 3.0 L993M, L932M, L992U, or compatible standard 3.0 remote L979M, L979U, or L979S

For Security+ 3.0-only applications, additional options include the L991S one-button remote, L993S three-button remote, and L979S keypad.

These S models are not substitutes for MAX or universal accessories on older openers. Their manufacturer pages specify Security+ 3.0 applications: L991S, L993S, and L979S.

Can an older remote operate a new Security+ 3.0 opener?

Do not assume that it can.

A new multi-generation remote may operate an older compatible opener. That does not make compatibility work in the opposite direction.

LiftMaster’s new-opener instructions require compatible Security+ 3.0 remote transmitters and wireless keypads.

Likewise, buying a multi-generation remote does not convert an older opener’s radio system, wall-control platform, or connected features.

Discontinued LiftMaster wall controls

Wall controls require a separate compatibility check. Similar appearance, matching button counts, or two-wire connections do not establish interchangeability.

Discontinued control Discontinuation Listed replacement
881LMW January 1, 2026 880LMW Smart Control Panel
78LM January 1, 2026 No direct replacement specified in the bulletin
378LM January 1, 2026 No direct replacement specified in the bulletin

Replacing an 881LMW

The LiftMaster 880LMW Smart Control Panel is the designated replacement to evaluate.

It provides an LCD interface and motion-activated lighting control for compatible Security+ 2.0 installations. Check the manufacturer specifications and accessory compatibility chart.

The original 8500 and 8500C are excluded from the ordinary 880LMW application.

Why the newer L958W is not an automatic replacement

The L958W Smart Control Panel is designed for Security+ 3.0 applications.

The L955W multifunction control and L956W wireless control also belong to the Security+ 3.0 control family.

Manufacturer compatibility is available for the L958W, L955W, and L956W.

Do not substitute one of these controls for a Security+ 2.0 panel solely because it is newer.

Replacing a 78LM or 378LM

The discontinuation bulletin does not identify one direct successor for either control.

For certain older Security+ openers, the 889LM myQ Control Panel may be an upgrade option. The manufacturer’s instructions identify supported purple-button systems and red/orange-button systems manufactured after 1998.

This is a conditional option, not a universal 78LM replacement.

The 378LM is a wireless secondary control. Replacing it with a wired panel changes the installation and may not retain all functions. Specify whether you need wireless mounting, light control, or only door activation when asking for a replacement.

Are all older Security+ 2.0 accessories discontinued?

No. The accessory bulletin retained several products, including 891LM, 893MAX, 878MAX, and certain wall controls.

For supported legacy applications, compare the 893MAX remote, 878MAX keypad, and 880LMW control panel.

Their continued inclusion in that bulletin does not make them suitable for every newer opener. Confirm compatibility and current availability before ordering.

Get help matching your replacement

Contact Garage-DoorParts.com with photographs of the opener label, learn button, accessory label, and any external receiver.

Include how many doors or gates you operate and which functions you need to retain. This helps distinguish a replacement that simply activates the door from one that preserves your complete setup.

Safety: Program and test accessories with the door in view and people clear of its travel. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, protect access codes, and never bypass safety devices to make an incompatible accessory operate.
